In all honesty, nail art has never really been my thing. Firstly, it’s too fiddly for my liking and secondly, my nails can chip within a day so it just seems pointless. However a bit of glitter has always been a hit with me and what better time to whack out the glitter than halloween! I decided to go green and went for my nars nail polish in shutter and top it off with ciatés party shoes (previously featured in the blog). The green and blue flecks of glitter have really brought the polish to life and also given it that halloweeny vibe. What’s on your nails this halloween?
For those of you who have been reading my posts on Ciaté Mini Mani Month, you may have noticed that I never quite managed to post about polish number 24. I will be perfectly honest and tell you that I did write a post and paint my nails but I never got round to taking pictures. I then noticed that my nails are actually in terrible condition now from all the painting and taking off of nail polish and they have turned a horrible yellow making me look like I’ve got smokers fingers so I will finish mini mani month but only when my nails seem up to it!
I’ve also had a week off from studying and haven’t spoken a single word of German which has been so relaxing! Sometimes you only realise you’ve run out of steam when you actually rest and I can tell you, I needed a rest. The blog will be starting up again properly in the new year and I’m hoping it will start coming into it’s own. More lifestyle will be included so cookery, travel, and health and maybe even a few book reviews (my New Years resolution is to always have a book on the go) and my youtube channel should hopefully be up and running as well. But to those who have read my blog so far, thank you so much, it’s been a brilliant first couple of months and I can’t wait to keep writing in 2014. Happy New Year Everyone!
Please, Please, Please do not think I have been lazy with my blog lately, but I’m sure many of you can agree that the final few days before christmas are possibly the most hectic and chaotic days you will ever experience. Friday was basically taken up with a whole day of travelling back from Germany to England, which was so manic there were literally people crying on the floor of the train (myself included). This weekend has been spent celebrating my Mum’s 50th birthday! It’s been brilliant fun and I even got to go on a spa day which has left me feeling so relaxed before the big day. I’ll also be honest that in all of that time my upkeep of my nails has come to a halt and I have one hand covered in friday’s polish and one hand covered in saturday’s, as I intended to write this post days ago. I’ll cram everything into one today though, as I’m sure most people don’t have the time to go reading individual posts anyway!
Day 20: Ivory Queen.
Ciaté have got every nail polish right so far minus the nail beads but they really aren’t very good with timing. On day 18 I got ‘Amazing Gracie’ which was the most gorgeous pale pink but then 2 days later I got basically the same colour but just a bit more “ivory”. Nevertheless I still love it and it’s another nude to add to my collection. This calendar has really helped my to discover polishes I would never normally wear.
Day 21: Confetti.
Glitter polishes tend to be hit and miss. Some barely show up and some are just ridiculously gritty and make my teeth grind everytime I grate my nails off something. Confetti is niether of those and went over Ivory Queen like a dream. The finish was so lovely and was a surprise competitor for my favourite glitter polish so far!
Day 22: Christmas Tree Caviar.
Ahh Ohh they did it again. They gave me bloody nail beads. These are little more christmassy which made me willing to try them but I think these will be going off to charity. It’s a shame because even if I did like nail beads I couldn’t wear them anyway due to the mess they leave. Not for the neat freaks!
Day 23: Locket.
Well we’re all thinking it so I might as well say it. This looks shit. But it’s really not! It’s a glitter polish with silver pigment in it which I didn’t realise it had so I painted it over “boudoir” thinking it would look cool and christmassy, when in fact I was completely wrong and made a complete mess. As a polish on its own though it’s very unique and very pretty!
After more than 2 weeks of wearing glitter, reds, blues and some pastels, it felt like it was time to tone it down. Lucky for me Ciaté agreed and presented me with ‘Members Only’. The picture makes it look like a gold colour when in fact its more of a pink. In short, it’s a rose gold. It’s barely noticeable but at the same time you catch an occasional glimpse of shiny pink nails. I had to apply it 3 times before I got any real colour showing through but it was completely worth it. It hasn’t even smudged amongst my evening of present wrapping, a crying baby and tidying the flat which believe me, IS an accomplishment. I’ll leave it up to the pictures to explain the rest so until tomorrow!
Pink is always a nail polish colour that I think looks nice but it’s never my first choice to buy. I’ll always go for blues, or greens or any other bright colour. I am actually really pleased I’ve got so many red and pinks in this calendar as they do make a statement and stand out and it’s meant I’ve been able to experiment with colours and what suits me. Today’s polish ‘Play date’ was an instant winner as it reminds me of my favourite MAC Lipstick ‘Impassioned’. It has a redness to it but I can still spot the hot pink in it making it quite an unusual colour. As sad as I was to take yesterday’s nail varnish off, this one has really helped to ease the pain. It was easy to apply and I could have left it at one coat but I always do 2 coats no matter what colour. I’ve topped it off with ‘Speed Coat’ and now I’ve got a lovely set of shiny nails. I’ve put on my fancy ring that my Aunt gave to me before I left England just to make myself feel that extra bit special. Might sound like a silly thing to do but it’s always nice to feel good about yourself on a christmassy sunday.
I am happy to announce that I didn’t get a pastel or mint today! As much as I love them I was craving some glitter, and I was not let down. I got ‘Party Shoes’ which reminds me of a pair of topshop sparkly shoes that I used to wear so it the name actually had some relevance to me. Today’s is an actual glitter polish so I had to be creative as it is well known that glitter polishes require a lot of time and patience unless you are actually going for a really sheer look. I decided to try something different and went for Essie’s ‘Mink Muffs’ which is a lovely mocha colour and layer up the glitter on top. I feel quite happy with the results as the glitter went on quite easily and has a lovely shine to it which is normally quite hard to achieve with other polishes. I think I deserve a big pat on the back for my masterpiece!
I am a devoted follower of Lisa Eldridge and her work as she always goes for a variety of products in her tutorials and uses them beautifully. In her most recent video click here was based on old Hollywood and vintage golds, which is perfect for this time of year and obviously made me want to go out anf buy the products she used. My particular favourite was the Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow, which looked like a fine, powder like, bright, gold glitter. I was willing to part with my money, (although Harry wasn’t so enthusiastic) but luckily a tweet from Lisa revealed that Essence Metal Glam is a dupe! It has the exact same consistency as the Bobbi Brown Shadow although it may be a little bit more white than gold but it applies so sheer that you can barely tell the difference.
The colour I got was 07 Golden Up! and I also treated myself to 05 Chocolate Jewellery which is a brown eyeshadow with flecks of green and gold glitter. These came in at €2.45 each so it’s most likely I will be returning for more. Essence is starting to make it’s way over to the UK but very slowly otherwise its available here.
Jingle all the way! I was so pleased to get another pot of glitter! Today’s is Jingle belle and it gives you the most christmassy nails I have ever seen. It’s a red glitter with green and gold tones in it. For me the main colours of christmas are red, green and gold so I think that they have got it bang on here. I painted my nails with boudoir and then lightly sprinkled the glitter over the top. I waited for a few minutes to wash my hands but when I did barely any glitter came off and my nails look nice and neat. It’s a messy job and at times emotional (it was in my case when I accidentally put the boudoir nail polish brush into the tub of glitter without realising.. boudoir is now ruined.) but it was completely worth it. I am nearly half way through my Ciaté calendar now and I can honestly say I will be a lost woman without it. Hope you’ve all enjoyed my posts so far!
So today was an absolute corker! Rather than a nail varnish I got a pot of glitter called Sequin Miss Mistletoe and it really does sum up the Christmas season. Its a combination of red, orange, gold and peach sequins and you simply pour them onto wet nails. You can choose any nail polish to go underneath, but I thought the glitter was so lovely itself, that I kept it fairly neutral and used Rimmel Salon Pro Reggae Splash. I have only painted my thumb today as this glitter is so special that I wanted to keep it for any upcoming christmas parties or even New Year’s Eve. Can’t wait to see what’s in tomorrow’s window!
